Your last hurrah before hibernation
Saying goodbye to one of Lake Placid’s most iconic seasons is never easy, so we’re making the most of every last moment of fall. The peak foliage crowds have thinned, the leaves are hanging on in shades of deep red and rust, and the cooler temperatures have us dreaming of snowy trails. But before the first snowfall transforms the landscape, there’s still time to squeeze a little more out of autumn.
Find your late-fall views
One of the best things about the Adirondacks is that you don’t have to venture far to find a great view. Even a casual walk near Lake Placid can bring you face-to-face with mountain scenery, winding trails, and those last pops of color. Take a stroll through Henry’s Woods or explore the trails at Heaven Hill, or head out on the Adirondack Rail Trail for a scenic walk through the surrounding landscape. Enjoy the crunch of leaves underfoot while you can, because before long, many of these familiar trails will be blanketed in snow and ready for cross-country skiing.
Looking for a bit more adventure? Post-peak is a great time to hike the High Peaks. With foliage-season crowds settling down and more leaves falling from the trees, mountain views open up even further, revealing sweeping vistas and the last hints of color tucked into the landscape. Just remember that late fall brings unpredictable conditions at higher elevations, so check the forecast and trail conditions before heading out.
Paddle Mirror Lake
The Adirondacks are full of waterways to explore, but few offer the convenience and scenery of a paddle on Mirror Lake. This front-country adventure puts you right in the center of Lake Placid, with views of the High Peaks in the distance and the village shoreline all around you. Enjoy the crisp fall air and peaceful water before pulling ashore and heading straight to Main Street for a post-paddle bite, a little shopping, or a warm drink. Before long, Mirror Lake will freeze over and belong to the skaters and dog sledders, so take advantage of these last days on the water while you can.
Toast to fall
For those who look forward to the seasonal harvest all year, late fall is a chance to enjoy those flavors one more time. Local restaurants and bars update their menus to reflect the season, making it a good time to find one last pumpkin-dusted coffee, order that butternut squash soup you’ve been craving, or stop by a brewery for another pour of your favorite autumn amber ale. Seasonal craft cocktails and mocktails offer even more ways to enjoy fall before winter arrives.
Take a scenic drive
Pack a picnic before hitting the road. Pick up sandwiches at Big Mountain Deli or the Adirondack Corner Store, then take a scenic loop through some of the region’s prettiest small towns. Browse local shops in Keene, then head to Jay to see the Jay Covered Bridge and visit the Jay Craft Center. Continue to Wilmington for a drive past Whiteface Mountain, more beautiful mountain scenery, and a sweet treat from ADK Chocolates.
