ECAC Hockey

The ECAC Women’s and Men’s Ice Hockey Championships bring the league’s top teams to the historic Herb Brooks Arena, where every shift feels bigger and every goal echoes a little louder.

The women take the ice first, with semifinals on March 6 and a winner-takes-all championship on March 7, crowning the ECAC champion and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The final four teams have been determined, and Lake Placid looks forward to welcoming Yale, Cornell, Princeton, and Quinnipiac to the ice.

Later in the month, the men’s semifinals take place on March 20, followed by the championship game on March 21, as the final four teams battle in a single-elimination format for the Whitelaw Cup and a spot in the national tournament.

Fans decked out in team jerseys and face paint fill the stands, the energy infectious from the first puck drop. Nail-biting third periods and overtime finishes keep everyone on the edge of their seats. When the final buzzer sounds, Main Street comes alive as players, families, and supporters spill into local bars to relive every crushing hit, breakaway, and game-winning goal. There's nothing quite like championship hockey in a rink where legends were made, the atmosphere louder, rawer, and charged with electricity that only a building soaked in history can deliver.

The energy along the course is contagious. Cowbells ring, flags wave, and crowds cheer for skiers from around the globe. With bright March sunshine and crisp mountain air, every moment is amped up with spring energy. Watching world-class athletes compete in such an up-close, thrilling setting is an experience you won’t forget, and Lake Placid delivers it better than almost anywhere else.

Whether you are a longtime cross-country fan or a first-time spectator, the World Cup Finals offer an exciting fan experience, with fun and entertainment that extends far beyond the races themselves.

The bonus round: late-winter magic

Beyond the headline events, March might be one of the most enjoyable times to simply be in Lake Placid. Cozy cafés spill onto sidewalks, fire pits glow later into the evening, and Olympic sites buzz with visitors inspired by the competitions happening around town.

Longer daylight means more time to explore. Bluebird skies invite spring skiing at Whiteface Mountain, where terrain features iconic corn conditions and the après scene starts to feel a little sunnier. Spring on the slopes also brings some of the season’s most playful traditions, including fan-favorite events like Pond Skimming and the Apple Butter Open, when costumes, big sends, and plenty of laughs take over the mountain.

Winter hasn’t quite left, but spring is certainly arriving!

Why March might be Lake Placid’s best-kept secret

March holds a rare balance. The snow is still here. The competition is fierce. The village is lively. And the longer days hint at everything to come.

So while the rest of the country fills out brackets, you can experience a different kind of madness, the kind that only happens when winter and spring overlap in Lake Placid.
