Traffic impact info for the IRONMAN Lake Placid triathlon on Sunday, July 19, 2026 

The 27th running of IRONMAN Lake Placid will take place Sunday, July 19, 2026. The following are all estimated times based on New York State Police traffic control. Please use caution and expect delays. 

Road Closures

In Lake Placid/North Elba: Temporary road closures will begin at 5 a.m. 

  • Cummings Rd. will be closed from 4 AM to midnight.

  • Mirror Lake Dr. from Northwood Rd. to Main St. in Lake Placid will be closed from 5 AM to 1 AM (unless clean-up can conclude earlier).

  • Northwood Rd. from Rte 86 to Mirror Lake Dr. will be closed southbound from 6 AM to 6 PM.

  • Parkside Dr. in Lake Placid will be closed from Mirror Lake Dr. to Main St. from 5 AM to 1 AM.

  • Colden Ave from School St. to Mill Pond Dr. will be closed from 6 AM to 2 PM.

  • Main St. from the Post Office to Station St. will be closed from 5 AM to 1 AM.

  • Rte 73 from Mill Pond Dr. to River Rd. will be closed from 5 AM to 1 AM.

  • River Rd. will be closed from 11 AM to midnight.

  • Bobrun Ln. will be closed in both directions from 7 AM to 3 PM.

  • Parking will not be permitted overnight on Saturday 7/18 on Mirror Lake Dr. in front of the tennis courts, nor on Parkside Dr. from Main St. to Mirror Lake Dr. Parking on Main St. from Parkside Dr. near the Post Office south is prohibited overnight on Saturday 7/18.

Outside of Lake Placid:

  • Road closures (Rte 86) southbound to Lake Placid from Wilmington and Jay beginning at 7 AM until 6:30 PM.

  • Rte 9N will close northbound from the Rte 73 intersection in Keene to Glen Rd. in Jay from 6 AM until 4 PM.

  • Stickney Bridge Rd. will be closed north and eastbound from Glen Rd. to Rte 9N from 7 AM until 4 PM. Detour traffic is permitted in the opposite lane to access Jay and Keene.

  • Rte 9N southbound will be closed from Stickney Bridge Rd. to the Rte 86 intersection from 7 AM until 4 PM.

  • Bilhuber Rd. will be closed to traffic from 8 AM to 3 PM.

  • Haselton Rd. will remain open from Bilhuber Rd. to the Town of Black Brook. No vehicle travel south of Bilhuber Rd. will be permitted until 4 PM.

  • Road closures (Rte 73) south/eastbound from Lake Placid to Keene beginning at 6 AM until 4 PM.

  • Notice to residents and businesses along the Wilmington Rd.: Runner traffic will continue from noon until midnight.

Alternate Routes

LAKE PLACID TO JAY: From Saranac Ave./Rte 86, go left at High Peaks Resort to Mirror Lake Dr. Left on Northwood Rd. Left on Cobble Hill Rd. Left on Rte 86 to Wilmington. Right on Rte 86 to Jay. Expect delays in Lake Placid, Wilmington, and Jay 8 AM- 5 PM.

AU SABLE FORKS TO WILMINGTON: North on Main St. at Stewart’s. Left on Guideboard Rd. Left to Silver Lake Rd. Left on Bonnieview Rd. to Wilmington. Expect delays in Wilmington.

AU SABLE FORKS TO SARANAC LAKE/LAKE PLACID: North on Main St. at Stewart’s to stop sign. Left on Guideboard Rd. Bear left at fork to Silver Lake Rd. Left on Union Falls Rd. to Rte 3. Left on Rte 3 to Saranac Lake. In Saranac Lake, take Rte 86 East to Lake Placid.

AU SABLE FORKS TO KEENE: Rte 9N West, crossing Bridge go right to Sheldrake Rd. Sheldrake Rd. intersects with Stickney Bridge Rd. Turn left on Stickney Bridge Rd. to Rte 9N in Jay. Turn left to Upper Jay and Keene.

SARANAC LAKE TO I-87 SOUTHBOUND: Rte 3 West to Tupper Lake. Rte 30 South to Long Lake. Rte 28N to Newcomb. Rte 2 East to Exit 29 on I-87/Rte 28N to Warrensburg.

POINTS SOUTH ON ROUTE I-87: From northbound Rte I-87 take exit 29 to Rte 2 West to Rte 28N. Turn right on Rte 28N to Newcomb. Rte 28N to Long Lake. Right on Rte 30 to Tupper Lake. Right on Rte 3 East to Saranac Lake. Take exit 30 for travel to Keene Valley, Keene or Lake Placid. Expect delays at Keene.

POINTS NORTH ON ROUTE I-87 TO LAKE PLACID: Going southbound on Rte I-87, take exit 31 to Rte 9N North. Rte 9N North to Elizabethtown. Rte 9N North to Rte 73. Right on Rte 73 to Keene. Expect delays at the intersection in Keene.

KEENE TO LAKE PLACID: Rte 73 westbound lane open. Expect delays at River Rd./Ski Jumps intersection. Access Village of Lake Placid via Old Military Rd.

LAKE PLACID TO WILMINGTON/AU SABLE FORKS/I-87 NORTHBOUND: From Saranac Ave./Rte 86, go left at Main St. at the High Peaks Resort to Mirror Lake Dr. Left on Northwood Rd. Left on Cobble Hill Rd. Left on Rte 86 to Wilmington. Straight through intersection on Bonnieview Rd. (County Rte 19). Right on Silver Lake Rd. and follow detour arrows to Au Sable Forks. Expect delays in the Village of Lake Placid and in Wilmington from 8 AM to 6 PM.

BLACK BROOK TO WILMINGTON AND JAY: From Silver Lake Rd., take Bonnieview Rd. turning left at Rte 86 (4 corners) in Wilmington. Haselton Rd. will close from Bilhuber Rd. to Rte 86.

IRONKids Traffic Impacts – July 17

On Friday, July 17, Mirror Lake Dr. closed from Northwood Rd. to Parkside Dr. 2 PM- 3:30 PM. No parking will be permitted on Mirror Lake Dr. near the tennis courts overnight on Thursday 7/16 until the completion of the IRONKids event on Friday (est. 3:30 PM).

IRONMAN Community Hotline

Ironman Lake Placid has established a community relations coordinator and hotline to assist with training and race-related issues. The community relations coordinator is able to assist with quickly mitigating challenges for community members and businesses as they arise. 

Businesses and community members should use this if someone has a question about getting to work, is in need of an escort because they live on the race course, an issue presents itself, etc.
