WINTER OLYMPIC CELEBRATION
HISTORY, COMMUNITY, LEGACY, FUTURE
As proud host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid will celebrate the Milano Cortina 2026 Games with a month of community and visitor events that honor our past, cheer for Team USA, and inspire future athletes.

Skate on the historic James C. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval, where Eric Heiden won 5 gold medals in 1980 with special themed nights all month long. Opportunities to meet former Olympians or Team USA hopefuls. 

  • Monday, February 16 & 23, 4:30 – 6:30 pm | “Learn About the Olympic Sport of Speed Skating” Join local speed skating icon and US Speedskating World/National Certified coach Tom Miller for engaging sessions designed to educate and inspire. A behind-the-scenes look at the sport that brought Lake Placid Olympic glory, while providing a chance for hands-on learning. Whether you’re lacing up for the first time or curious about the fast-paced world of Olympic skating, this is a unique opportunity to learn from one of the region’s most experienced coaches.

    • Demonstrations of speed skating form and technique

    • Introductory drills and tips for trying speed skating

    • Personal stories from Tom’s coaching career and experiences with Olympians

    • Ideal for school groups, aspiring skaters, and Oval visitors of all ages

  • Wednesday, February 11, 5 pm-7 pm | “Free Family Skating Night” sponsored by Gordon W Pratt Agency in Partnership with the Ed OP Fund and Hosted by the Olympic Authority. Free Skate Rentals, Hot Cocoa & Cookies for all.
