Climbing in the Adirondacks

Climbing in the Adirondacks can mean many things. There are options for both rock and ice climbing, depending on the season, and within rock climbing you can partake in many disciplines. In and around Lake Placid, there are options for trad climbing, sport climbing, bouldering, and indoor climbing.

Rock climbing

If you're interested in rock climbing in or near Lake Placid, the majority of the offerings are trad climbing. Cliffs at Pitchoff and Chapel Pond are among the most popular, with nearby options like The Slabs at Wilmington Notch and various other cliffs in Keene Valley collectively holding hundreds of routes.

On rainy days, climbers can head over to the indoor bouldering and top rope walls at Mt Van Hoevenberg

Ice climbing

During the winter months, the Adirondacks have world-class ice climbing, with some of the same cliffs that are climbed in the summer months transforming into sheets of ice. The cliffs at Pitchoff and various crags in Keene Valley offer ice climbing routes of varying levels of difficulty and you are never far from local amenities.
