Fire Safety Notice For Essex County, New York
Effective August 12 – September 11, 2025
Due to extremely dry conditions and an increased risk of wildfires, Essex County is under a Local State of Emergency.
To protect people, homes, and nature, the following fire safety rules are now in effect:
What’s Not Allowed:
- 
No open fires are allowed anywhere in Essex County. This includes uncontained campfires, burning barrels, and other outdoor fires.
 - 
All previously issued burning permits are suspended until further notice.
 
What Is Allowed:
- 
Small campfires are allowed only if they are built in designated fire rings at campsites and fully contained.
 - 
Never leave a campfire unattended.
 - When you’re done, make sure all fires are extinguished with water and stir ashes until they are cold to the touch.
 
County Actions:
- 
All Essex County departments are taking extra measures to ensure public safety and enforce these rules.
 - 
This emergency order is in effect until September 11, 2025, at 11:59 AM, unless extended.
