Summit

NOTE: The trail up Little Porter Mountain from the Garden parking area is closed until further notice. This mountain can be approached from the Marcy Field and Cascade Mountain trailheads.

Little Porter is a rocky ledge with an expansive view on the trail to Porter Mt. This approach leaves from the Garden in Keene Valley and starts along the Big Slide Mountain Trail. At 0.2 mile up the Big Slide Mountain Trail make a right onto the trail for Little Porter and Porter Mountains. The trail after dropping down slightly to cross Slide Brook begins a much longer climb through a very attractive mixed forest. Initially you will be crossing private property, please stay on the marked trail. The climb near the end is much steeper and a bit eroded, but the route gets you up high very fast. At the top of the ridge you will have a short spur trail of about 30 yards to the bald rocky summit of Little Porter Mountain.

Trailhead: From the intersection of Route 73 and 86 in Lake Placid follow Route 73 toward Keene. Proceed through Keene into Keene Valley on Route 73. Take the right after the Ausable Inn and follow to the end of the road at The Garden Parking Area — note there is a day fee to use this lot. Parking is limited and the lot is usually full by 8 a.m. or earlier on weekends. On most weekends, a shuttle bus runs from the overflow parking at Marcy Field north of Keene Valley. Parking is not permitted on the road to the Garden, so one must park in the village if not using the shuttle.
