This is a scenic cruise around Whiteface and McKenzie mountains.
Stunning beauty in any season, but especially striking in the fall, when crisp temperatures are perfect for longer, more strenuous routes. LENGTH: 46 miles.
LOOP DIRECTIONS: Starting from Lake Placid, take Route 86 east to Wilmington. Turn left on Route 431 and climb a very long and demanding hill. At the top of the hill bear right onto County Route 18 towards Bloomingdale and cruise down a series of hills (beware loose gravel) and along the edge of Franklin Falls Pond. Turn left on Route 3 in Bloomingdale. In Saranac Lake, turn left on Pine Street, stay left on McKenzie Pond Road to Route 86 in Ray Brook and then turn left to head back to Lake Placid.
Avoid the more strenuous mountain stretch by reversing the route; leave Lake Placid for Saranac Lake using Route 86. After passing the state police barracks in Ray Brook, look to the right and take McKenzie Pond Road to Pine Street, Pine Street to Route 3. After taking a right at the Bloomingdale 4-way stop, go to the bottom of the hill and pass over Sumner Brook before taking another right-hand turn onto County Route 18. Turn around at Franklin Falls Pond.
This is a fine choice for scenery, especially in fall.
