This coming weekend seems to be about all things nordic! The annual Lake Placid Loppet cross country ski race takes place on Saturday, January 26th complemented by a full schedule of added events. There are kids races, receptions, films and much more to fill up your nordic weekend in Lake Placid.

On Friday night at 6 pm there's a Wax Clinic, followed by a FREE .5K kids race at 6:30 for our future Loppet racers 12 years old and under at Mt. Van Hoevenberg Cross Country Center. The Loppet itself begins at 9 am Saturday, followed by an awards banquet at 3 pm at The Conference Center at Lake Placid.

Saturday from 4 - 6 pm, a film preview and Banff Reception at High Peaks Cyclery will feature previews of the 2013 Banff Film Festival movies and free refreshments. All of this will culminate on Sunday evening with the 2013 Banff Mountain Film Festival at the LPCA at 7 pm. I hear there are still some tickets available (as of Thursday morning) to this historically sold out event.

And then there are the full moon parties. As a great bonus, the full moon conveniently falls on Saturday this month! Cascade Cross Country Center hosts its legendary event on Saturday evening with skiing on their lighted trails, bonfires, beer and hot dogs. A live band in the lodge will entertain skiers and non-skiers throughout the night. You don't HAVE to ski to join the festivities, but it sure makes it more fun! In Newcomb, the Adirondack Interpretive Center will host their Full Moon Snowshoe Hike and Chili Chow Down, beginning at 6 pm.

Don't forget to visit some of our other

cross country ski centers or public trails in your free time between the many events of the weekend. And if you find yourself longing for some competitive non-nordic diversion, head over to Mirror Lake and catch some Can/Am Pond Hockey action, which goes on from Thursday to Sunday on the ice in front of Golden Arrow Resort on Main Street.

Have fun and dress for the cold this weekend because it really is winter here in the Adirondacks!
