Snowshoeing Trails

Don't let the snow keep you off the trails — grab a pair of snowshoes and hike all winter long. Snowshoeing is one of the premier Lake Placid outdoor activities, allowing you to get off the slopes and enjoy the expansive trails throughout the Adirondack Park. With more than 2,000 miles of walkable terrain, the Adirondack trail system will allow you to take in the fresh air of the forest, the beautiful scenery and the local wildlife.

An easy skill to learn with little equipment necessary, snowshoeing is an affordable, accessible family activity for all to enjoy. Many hotels offer trails of their own, or have equipment on site, so be sure to ask what's available. Take a stroll over to Lake Placid's Main Street shops prior to departure to get your winter gear and get going.

As you trudge through the back country's fresh powder paths – many of which double as cross country skiing trails – view the iced-over waterfalls and pristine snow-covered trees, seeing nature from a whole new perspective. From Mount Van Hoevenberg, Scarface Mountain, and the popular Jackrabbit Trail and beyond, snowshoeing is a winter activity you won't want to miss.

Although snowshoeing has been around for more than 6,000 years, today, it's one of the fastest growing winter sports. For runners and Ironman Lake Placid triathletes, snowshoeing is an excellent winter cross-training activity to stay in shape, burning more than 600 calories per hour. After working up an appetite on the trail, head to one of the many Lake Placid restaurants to refuel, and get ready for tomorrow's adventure.
