Bad weather? Go indoors in Lake Placid!

We’ve all been there, a trip to a scenic destination where you’ve planned to go hiking, paddling, camping, or do some other outdoor activity, only to be thwarted by bad weather. Luckily, Lake Placid loves the outdoors so much that there are indoor activities for all types of outdoorsy people!

Climbing at Mt Van Hoevenberg

When it’s raining, and the rock is too wet to climb outdoors, Mt Van Hoevenberg has both a 30-foot toprope wall and a diverse bouldering wall to keep you busy for a couple of hours! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, leading to quality routes and boulder problems, and a supportive atmosphere. You don’t need your gear to give this a try, they have rentals available and can teach you how to use all of the equipment. This space is for all ability levels, so don’t be afraid to give it a try if you’re newer to the sport.

Crossfit

Is there a better way to get your body fit for any adventure than CrossFit? We don’t think so! At CrossFit Lake Placid, classes and drop-in hours are available 7 days a week, making it super convenient for fitting into any day of your visit. Their workouts are translatable to everyday activities and can be a good substitute for not being able to get out into the mountains on rainy days when the trails are muddy and susceptible to damage.

Combining a yoga session post-activity (like any of the ones above) will leave your body feeling ready for whenever you can get back outdoors to recreate. You have choices too, with several studios in Lake Placid open for group classes or private sessions. If you want to round out your recovery activities, check out a spa or salon for that extra care your body surely needs after a day of indoor climbing or CrossFit.

Why not prepare for your next big outdoor activity by checking out all the outdoor gear stores in and around Lake Placid? If you’re looking for bicycle equipment/rentals, peruse Placid Planet or High Peaks Cyclery. You can also plan your next guided trip at High Peaks Cyclery, where High Peaks Mountain Guides is located. Head to Eastern Mountain Sports for a wide range of gear and affordable outdoor apparel options. You should also make a road trip from Lake Placid to Keene Valley, where you’ll find The Mountaineer, a world-glass gear shop that hosts a wonderful library (perfect for a rainy day).

After spending a rainy day climbing, taking a yoga or CrossFit class, gearing up for your next adventure, or all of the above, you’ll be ready for that next sunny day! Between all these indoor activities, refuel at any of Lake Placid’s perfect dining spots, you won’t be disappointed.
