When I threw my leg over my road bike for the first time last week the shifting didn't feel crisp, the wheels didn't quite roll right, and the chain was so dirty from all of the use it saw last season that it left a very embarrassing mark on my right calf. It occurred to me that it was time for a tune-up.

 Getting a tune-up in the beginning of the cycling season is a great way to start fresh with a bike that is working properly and also a great way to make sure your treasured two-wheeled machine is still safe. A basic tune-up from one of Lake Placid's local bike shops will include a general cleaning of all of the surfaces, making sure everything is tightened properly, ensuring the wheels are still straight, and adjusting the gears to shift with precision. This type of general "tune-up" service is available at both Placid Planet Bicycles and High Peaks Cyclery.

You can rest assured that your two-wheeled machine will come back to you in tip top shape if it has passed through Bruce's hands.  Bruce has dedicated himself to service at High Peaks for five years, and loves helping customers have a great time on their bikes.  When Bruce isn't getting his hands dirty in the back of High Peaks Cyclery, he can be found railing the burms at The Whiteface Mountain Bike Park.  

For riders whose bikes need a little something special, Placid Planet advertises higher service packages on their website. The "Peak Performance" tune includes a full drive-train cleaning along with the general tune-up. The "total overhaul" is a great idea for riders who log serious miles on their bikes. If you choose this package the expert mechanics at Placid Planet will strip your bike down to the frame and meticulously cleanse every single piece and part. When put back together your machine will work like new.

If you are a visiting cyclist hoping to take advantage of these fantastic services from one of our great local shops it's a great idea to call ahead and schedule a time to have your bike serviced. Calling ahead can greatly reduce the turn-round time. In some cases with an appointment you might be able to drop your bike off in the morning, go enjoy one of Lake Placid's great restaurants, and pick up your bike with plenty of time for an afternoon ride.
