In August of 2014 we brought our son Karson to the pediatrician with a common cold. What they found during this visit was something that no parent wants to hear - there was a large mass next to his kidney and we would need further testing. We were rushed over to the UVM Children’s hospital where he underwent surgery to remove a neuroblastoma. They prepared us for the worst and the long road ahead. When Karson woke up from surgery he was so angry with us that we hadn’t told him how involved the surgery was (he had a very large incision on his stomach), that he wouldn’t speak to us. He was not himself for days… and then a child life specialist and a member of the National Guard asked if he would like to go with them to the children’s play area to make airplanes. We told them, there’s no way, and he won’t even get out of bed. Somehow they were able to get him to smile again and get out of the hospital bed - we couldn’t believe it. From that moment on Karson’s healing was miraculous. We were told that he would have to stay in the hospital for a minimum of 7 days… he was released the next evening (a total of 5 days). The nurses couldn’t believe it and kept preparing us for a decline. We continued to pray nonstop, daily, that he would recover and God answered our prayers. The surgeon had gotten the entire tumor out during surgery and it had not spread to any other parts of his body. He started with check ups every three months, now we are at check ups at every year and this will be his 4th year. When we go to the hospital, it’s like being surrounded by family and Karson looks forward to these visits. We know that not all families are given the same news. We want to ensure that every family and child in need is afforded the same care that we were. We thank God daily, and it is only right that we thank UVM Children’s Hospital as well, by giving back – and offering hope to other families.
If you have ever known a child who needed their services, you understand that this hospital is a truly amazing place. The services that they offer, whether it is family support services, child life specialists, or the comfort zone volunteers, really make a difference. We want to make sure that these services continue to be there for other children and their families.
All proceeds will go to children’s cancer research, child life specialists, and to help families with travel expenses, lodging, and financial hardships.
