Skiing is wonderful. It's common to see small children happily taking turns down the slopes, and this can form the basis for a ski-loving companion to think "anyone can do it." But it's not for everyone. There are plenty of good reasons you might not want to join your downhill-loving clan at the moment. At the same time, you don't want to spoil anyone's fun. Wave farewell as they catch the shuttle bus to the mountain, and discover your own way to have fun in the snow. Here are some ideas. A different slope Nordic skiing is about skiing on the flat... continue reading

It’s the highest vertical drop in the east, and here I am, strapped to a board about to descend this mighty mountain. Okay — so I didn’t quite get that far up the mountain, but I can certainly say I’ve gone snowboarding at Whiteface.  Snow Boarding 101  1) Take pride in acting and looking like a Jerry. 2) Don’t think about what anyone else thinks of you because you’re there to have fun. 3) Try something new. If you’re like me, I definitely don’t have any of the top-of-the-line ski gear, you just have to rock what you have. Live and... continue reading

These days, as we're getting closer to the Olympics, I can hardly watch a milk commercial without getting teary-eyed. You know the ones I mean? They feature letters from proud parents to the athletes about how they were "born" on skis, how they never gave up, how they endured endless nights at the rinks, and cold days at the mountain... Now, here they are — Olympic athletes. They have trained their whole lives for this. This moment in time, this event, this year. Now. People in cities, towns, and states all over the country will connect to these commercials. They speak... continue reading

The snow-covered pond is not yet frozen solid. The giant, snow-caked evergreens — worthy of The Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan — here, stand unknown, strong and proud, they stand here for me. The trails at John Brown Farm are family and four-legged pal friendly. So I come here in any mood, whether I want to hike, meander, or stroll. The trails intersect at various points so it’s a bit of a make-your-own-hike, which I find really fun and adventurous. Togetherness In Nature Whatever the dynamic of your family, I find the roaming, winding,... continue reading

If you like winter sports action, good local food, and zip lines, then you need to check out the 38th annual Empire State Winter Games. The huge, multi-sport event runs from February 1-4 and it’s coming out of the gate bigger and better than ever. This year there will be more competitors, a centralized village, a Jumbotron to watch it all on, and it’s all kicked off by a relay torch run that begins in Manhattan and ends in Lake Placid. Combine all of that with good food, craft beer, and events happening across several Adirondack communities, and the Games start to look... continue reading

As an avid mountain biker, the fall usually brings a nice touch to the trails and riding conditions, but we all know the season is soon to come to an end, and we will be changing gears and hitting the slopes. Our bikes will sit there in our sheds, or hanging up on the walls, waiting for the first signs of spring and warm weather to dry out the trails. This wait can be a long one, especially if you’re like me and are not an avid skier… at least not yet, anyway. For now I can just stare at my bike and binge watch mountain bike videos online. And then came winter fat tire... continue reading

Everyone has a picture in their head of that delightful "cabin in the woods." Considering a cabin also contains more options than you might think. Your own... continue reading

It's possible... that you are not a fan of this particular holiday. Perhaps it's that struggle through the mall crowds. Maybe you once got sick on Grandma's ribbon candy. Or it was those nightmares after watching "Bad Santa" way too late one night. Whatever the reason, Lake Placid understands. That is why there's the Holiday Village Stroll. This weekend event has all the great stuff holiday fans love, then puts a different spin on it to make the Grinches feel a little more tolerant. Authentic atmosphere People who dislike the fakery of snow from a... continue reading

“Great moments are born from great opportunities.” - Herb Brooks, 1980 USA Olympic Hockey Head Coach I grew up miles away from Lake Placid, in the middle of the woods, down a long dirt road, in a log cabin basically in the middle of nowhere. It all began when my dad gave me a pair of figure skates. These weren’t just figure skates; no, these were better! My dad ground the toe pick down all the way and referred to them from there on out as hockey skates. Next, he cut down a tree branch and carved it into what resembled a hockey stick, then he pushed me off, onto the ice... continue reading
