The Adirondack Region of Northern NY has earned high praise from hikers due to its incredible scenery and unique wildlife. There are 46 peaks that make up the Adirondack High Peaks, and most of them are located around beautiful Lake Placid. Before hiking, it is important to make sure you have packed the necessary items. Here are six essential items to bring on a hike through the Adirondacks.

Hiking Shoes

Perhaps the most important, but often overlooked, item to bring on a long hike is a pair of good hiking shoes. The temptation to buy the $15 bargain shoes exists in all of us, but it is highly recommended to fork up the big bucks and buy a pair of reliable hiking shoes. Rain is commonplace during the summer months here, so make sure to choose shoes that are water resistant. If you arrive at Lake Placid without the proper footwear, head to Main Street, where a number of sporting goods stores are located.

Water Bottle

This may come as a no-brainer, but you might be surprised to find out how many hikers attempt a long trek without the proper amount of water. Not sure how much water to bring? We asked one of our local guides and he said, “The rule of thumb is one liter of water for every two hours you are out.”

It’s always a smart move to carry a water purification system with you as well. This can really come in handy if you underestimate your H20 consumption and need a refill, or don’t feel like hauling the recommended amount.

Unlike many other parts of New York, the Adirondacks are generally warm during the summer, but rarely get scorching hot. This is great news for hikers here. You will be able to walk long distances without wanting to keel over from heat exhaustion.

Light Snacks

Another "duh" item on this list is snacks. Neglecting to eat during a long hike will sap your energy and make you fatigue quicker, so always have some snacks on you. Some good snacks include energy bars, trail mix, fruit and even candy. Yes, you read that right. Candy is filled with simple carbohydrates and sugar that will help boost your energy. Plus everyone loves a candy bar!

Any last-minute snacks can be purchased at one of the numerous convenience stores around Lake Placid.

Trail Map

There are over 2,000 miles of trails through the Adirondack region, making it the largest trail system in the nation. Most hikes around Lake Placid are clearly marked, but a map is still an essential item to have with you.

A good map will not only help you get your bearings and navigate better, but can also help you decide which trail you want to choose based on the distance and difficulty.

First Aid Kit

Some people may roll their eyes at the idea of bringing a first aid kit on a day hike, but in reality it is something that every hiker should carry, regardless of the trek difficulty. Carrying bandages, ointment and some minor pain relievers will give you peace of mind and can make a huge difference in your comfort during a hike.

Waterproof Jacket

Few things can sap your energy and make you miserable like being cold and wet. As stated before, the summer months in the Adirondacks receive the most rainfall, making a lightweight waterproof jacket an essential item on a hike.

Fortunately, if the weather isn't cooperating Lake Placid has clothing stores to help solve those problems you didn't pack for.
