  2. Intermediate skiers and snowboards can carve the freshies on the twists and curves of the ever popular Excelsior trail.

What to expect from RLS

I spoke with Aaron Kellet, current General Manager of Whiteface Mountain to get the inside scoop on the trail and I can’t wait to check it out for myself.

The new trail is just part of their plan to extend new terrain off of Lookout Mountain. Skier’s and riders will find Rand’s Last Stand has a nice, clean, fall-line with a larger open space between the trees compared to most of the other glades on the mountain. The ground of the trail is clean and clear of debris so it can be opened safely with minimal snow coverage.

Adding to the anticipation of its inaugural day is the new and unknown factors that play into this trail. Rand’s Last Stand is located on a different pitch of the mountain and its slope faces a different direction, so it’ll be exciting to see how sunlight, wind and snowfall will play into it’s on-snow conditions. Being that this trail is a glade trail, there is no snowmaking on it, so now we wait for mother nature to bring its much anticipated opening day.
