Lake Placid Blog

There it was. An opening in my work schedule. The weather said snow for the two days prior. The kids are in school and my wife would be at work. That means it’s time to head to Whiteface! So the texts go out to the usual suspects, but when the replies come back it’s all: “Gotta work” and “Can’t make it.” I realize that something amazing is about to happen. A day at Whiteface all by myself. Now, “all by myself” is a relative term because Whiteface is a popular ski destination with a wide range of people. So there are technically other people at the mountain.... continue reading

Can you do a triple axel? That’s my favorite question I get as a figure skater. No, I cannot do a triple axel, but yes, I can tell you about the 2017 Bridgestone Skate America, which will take place in Lake Placid on November 24-26. I know you don’t understand how we can spin that fast and not get dizzy, or how we do two rotations in the air and land on one blade on the ice. To be honest, sometimes I don't even understand it, but that's what makes the sport so exciting. A trip to Lake Placid is worth it on its own, but Skate America will be the icing on the cake.  ... continue reading

Are there bed and breakfasts here? Absolutely. The resort hotels in Lake Placid are so well-known and celebrated that our adorable B&Bs can be overlooked. But they shouldn't be. We have the historic old structures that make the best bed and breakfasts, along with the artisan crafters and artistic decorators which bring them to a peak of comfort and style. And don't forget about our dedicated hospitality tradition, which has always been an important part of the Adirondacks. Here are four delightful choices, all with their own special charms. Old-fashioned... continue reading

It was Friday afternoon, and a few of us decided to grab an end-of-the-week drink to kick the weekend off right. I walked into the bar area of Kanu, the rustic-yet-elegant restaurant on the second floor of the Whiteface Lodge, ready to meet their master mixologist Zach Blair. What originally caught my eye about Zach was a short article in Milk Street Kitchen magazine that highlighted a drink he invented called Cinnamon-Smoked Whiskey Sour, a title that includes several of my favorite things. The four of us bellied up, and as I shook hands with Zach I could tell this was going to be... continue reading

If you like beer like I do, you’re going to love October in the Adirondacks! Between Oktoberfest, Oktupperfest and the annual Lake Placid Brewfest, it’s a beer-lover’s paradise! Living in Denver for the past couple of years, I got very used to the microbrewery scene. Everywhere you turned, both in the city and in the suburbs, there was another craft brewery opening, and personally I like these beers so much better than the typical light beer that is mass produced and available everywhere. Here in the Adirondacks, I was happy to find that my new home has more than just a couple of... continue reading

Separation anxiety is real. And I am not referring to my dog’s angst, but of my own about leaving her behind. It’s that feeling of guilt as you look into those sad, liquid dark eyes. And if I pack my hiking shoes in front of her, and she starts wagging her tail, my guilt is unbearable. I want to save you from all of that, so I am happy to report that Lake Placid, our beautiful, water-side village ringed by Adirondack mountains, is not just dog tolerant, but downright canine hospitable. It is common to see dogs in hotel lobbies, on outdoor restaurant decks, frolicking on... continue reading

I love the night life, and for a small town Lake Placid delivers in a big way. The views at night are just as gorgeous, and very different than they are during the day. This quaint village is buzzing with people all of the time; however, the night is when things really start to shake up. One of the best parts about partying Lake Placid style is that everything is in walking distance, so you can easily bounce around without committing your whole night to one hot spot. You also can call a cab or Uber yourself around, if that's more your style. I prefer walking because I am a multitasker, so I... continue reading

Brew fest   I remember my first brew fest. I went in blindly thinking I would just have some beers, and some fun with my friends. That's it. And that's great. It is a great day to be had no matter what your purpose is, BUT, if you want to get the most out of brew fests, take some advice from me. A pro. What makes me a pro, you ask? Twenty years of at least three festivals each year, ranging from large national festivals to small farmers' festivals. I've done them all. I've worked at them, I've attended them, and I've even been to them when I was... continue reading
