With August upon us, families will find activities and events in the region numerous enough to keep them busy for weeks!  August seems to be the season of cultural and family-geared events throughout the Adirondacks. If you find yourself in the Lake Placid/High Peaks Region, our other regions are just a short drive away, most an hour or under.

This week we’re focused on the cultural scene around the region.

Highlighting the arts scene this week, Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA) is proud to present “Classical Moves: An Evening of Dance with Members of American Ballet Theatre & Friends”. American Ballet Theatre is recognized as one of the greatest dance companies in the world and we are indeed lucky to host them in performance here in Lake Placid on the LPCA stage. ABT has performed in the greatest theaters around the world and annually performs to audiences totaling over 600,000 in number. Tickets to this amazing performance on Thursday, August 9th are on sale now at LPCA box office.

The region’s theatre companies are also offering a busy schedule of plays and musicals. Choose from Westport’s Depot Theatre, Saranac Lake’s Pendragon Theatre and Bluseed Studio. LPCA has a full schedule of entertainment on stage all summer, including the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, our summer resident classical orchestra.

Just the story times, lectures, author signings and children’s entertainment all around the region will keep you busy if you follow them.

Adirondack Plein Air Festival
Adirondack Plein Air Festival attracts some of the region's most well-known painters

Coming up toward mid-month is the Adirondack Plein Air Festival in the Saranac Lake area.  Painters who like to create their masterpiece landscapes in the out of doors are invited to spend a few days painting in various locations around Saranac Lake. The highlight is a juried art show and sale at the Harrietstown Town Hall on August 18th.  Don’t miss this, as some of the region’s most well-known artists participate annually.

Also in Saranac Lake, the Third Thursday Art Walk will take place this month on August 15th. Artists are invited to set up displays and/or demonstrations in various locations at downtown merchants. Live musicians perform at many of the galleries. It’s always a fun and festive atmosphere in Historic Downtown Saranac Lake. The Art Walks take place every 3rd Thursday, June through September from 5 - 7:30 pm.

This is just a fraction of the cultural events awaiting you when visiting the High Peaks Region and beyond during August. Make sure to check the events in all the regions so you don’t miss something you might regret not being a part of:
