Lake Placid Blog

History is my worst subject. It's a curse; I have some sort of mental block that prevents me from retaining dates and their associated events. In hindsight, I should really just have paid better attention in history class. So, I was at first hesitant when my husband suggested that we attend a lyceum series of lectures by his friend Andy about American History, but eventually embraced the idea of learning more about our country's beginnings. Plus, I figured that some of our friends would be there and we could socialize after class. The series was held at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall, an historic... continue reading
Affordable dining in any resort community can be a challenge to the new visitor. Lake Placid is very fortunate to have many, many very good restaurants. Some are expensive and some are not. It's very possible to eat three meals a day in Lake Placid on a budget - even a small budget. It's also possible to spend your entire paycheck on a dinner if you so desire an elegant splurge. If you're on a budget, keep in mind that almost any restaurant in Lake Placid will be glad to have you in their establishment, even if you only order an appetizer and salad. Eating light has also become more of a norm... continue reading
By Diane Chase, author of Adirondack Family Time: Tri-Lakes and High Peaks Your Four-Season Guide to Over 300 Activities (with GPS Coordinates) This is the first time we’ve returned to Henry’s Woods since the death of our twelve-year-old golden retriever. It is a strange way to now remember walks that were once occupied with aspirin and arguments as the children both wanted to be the one to walk “their dog.” Ella didn’t care. She took advantage of the opportunity to be off the lead and get all footloose and fancy-free.Henry’s Woods is named after Henry Uihlein who left a lengthy legacy in the... continue reading
For those of you not familiar with the Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA), it would be worth your while to check out their offerings when planning a vacation or even a couple of days in Lake Placid. With all the amazing events and workshops, you could almost build an entire trip around things to do at LPCA. Check the adult workshops page and see if one of the classes would spark some latent talent you'd love to try to develop! There are even one day classes in pastel and jewelry making. The jewelry making classes also involve wine tasting and are loads of fun - I took one last... continue reading
By Diane Chase, author of the guidebook Adirondack Family Time Tri-Lakes and High Peaks Your four-Season Guide to Over 300 Activities (with GPS Coordinates) I can always tell when my children haven't been outside enough. They start picking on each other, are unable to relax and are easily annoyed. The same applies to me. We are on our way out of town and the bickering starts in the backseats. Accusations, poking and blame are all floating to the front of the car. I actually hear my husband say he'll pull the car over if those kids don't straighten out. Good grief. We have become our parents.... continue reading
If you've never experienced it, lunching with dancing bears can be incredibly enjoyable. Take a friend or two and drop on in to The Dancing Bears at the High Peaks Resort (in Lake Placid). For the uninitiated, The Bear Dance is a painting by William Hollbrook Beard. This romantic fantasy depicts bears -- symbolic of conservative financial investors -- celebrating a good business day; it was most probably painted earlier than The Bulls and Bears in the Market. The previous owners of property , the Roland family, named the original lounge, in what was then a Hilton Hotel, The Dancing Bears... continue reading
By Diane Chase, author of the guidebook Adirondack Family Time Tri-Lakes and High Peaks Your four-Season Guide to Over 300 Activities (with GPS Coordinates)Each year Tom Tucker of Tucker Farms, Inc. has a complex pattern designed so my family and many others will be lost trying to complete the Great Adirondack Corn Maze. This year it's "back to school" for the lot of us as Tom brings back the nostalgic one-room school house along with a playground, all depicted in rows of corn. Each person is given a blank game board and shown the entrance. We are looking for six mailboxes; each holding a... continue reading
This past Saturday, we had the pleasure of exploring the new Art Annex, located in Saranac Lake at 52 Main St. The Annex occupies the second story of the building occupied by the Artist's Guild in the historic Green's Market building. What a wonderful addition it is to the arts community of the Adirondacks.  Unfortunately, this was not an outing Bear could attend with us - he waited patiently in the car....The current exhibit in the tiny gallery is Adirondack Bra Art, an exhibit put together to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It was a very clever idea and the creativity... continue reading
I walk these trails frequently and lately even more since we have welcomed Bear, the yellow Lab, into our family. It's one of the best places to walk your dog since a summer swim for both of you is a great bonus in the middle of your walk, and the other skiers and snowshoers in the winter usually have their dogs in tow also, so you won't find those XC ski purists hollering at you for mucking up the track with pad prints for heaven's sake! If you've never been to the Peninsula Nature Trails, make a point of it soon. It's easy to find - just take Peninsula Way, between Comfort Inn and Ho Jo's... continue reading
I have heard the walk around Lake Placid's Mirror Lake referred to as "the fitness trail." I inquired at the Lake Placid/Essex County Convention and Visitor's Bureau and am told that though it is a nice 2.7-mile walk there are no fitness stations along the easily recognizable red-bricked sidewalk. We park the car on Parkside Drive, adjacent to a playground, tennis courts and the public beach. The public beach is still filled with people and the shoreline a buzz with activity. There are tennis courts and a playground at the south end of the lake adjacent to the village beach so, if motivated, I... continue reading
