Monument Falls
Monuments Falls

Sometimes an Adirondack road side stop can turn into its own adventure. Nestled between Lake Placid and Wilmington is a small waterfall, commonly referred to as Monument Falls. The two tablets commemorate the 50th and 100th anniversaries of the establishment of the Forest Preserve in 1885.

50th anniversary Conservation Monument
The first tablet, erected by the NYS Conservation Department in 1935, states, "This tablet commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of conservation in New York State on May 15, 1885 Governor David B. Hill signed the law establishing the Forest Preserve. The surrounding mountains, streams and woodlands have been acquired for the free use of all the people of the state and are maintained as wild forest land for the enjoyment of future generations."

This quick trip to a shallow waterfall is worth the stop to explore the West Branch of the Ausable River. This a popular fishing spot in season so be prepared to share space with anglers. There is a small path along the Ausable River that leads from the parking area to Monument Falls. There are plenty of flat rocks to sit upon and to explore.

To get to Monument Falls take Route 86, Wilmington Road from Lake Placid heading northeast for approximately 4.5 miles. The parking lot will be on the left side of the road.
