Adirondack International Mountaineering Festival

Time is running out to sign up for Mountainfest clinics! Please check our website for limited availability. The Mountaineer and Adirondack Rock and River have combined forces, yet again, to host the 21st Annual Adirondack International Mountaineering Festival on January 13th through January 15th, 2017. Mountainfest is an annual celebration of ice climbing and mountaineering featuring guest athletes who entertain us with tales of climbing trips, BIG adventures, instructional clinics taught by visiting climbers and local guides, demo gear, and a chance to gather the climbing community for an exciting winter weekend of comradery and climbing!

The weekend kicks-off with a Friday evening slideshow at 7:30pm, presented by Rab climber and athlete Scott Bennett. The presentation will take place at the Keene Valley School. Scott cut his teeth on the sandstone walls of Red River Gorge and it wasn’t long after he had grown to love the bigger mountains and was drawn to the longer alpine objectives. Scott has a knack for “picking the plums” in these remote areas as well as setting speed records on climbs such as “The Naked Edge” and one day speed ascents of El Capitan.

Kelly Cordes will be presenting Saturday night’s slideshow presentation. Kelly has spent most of his life avoiding full-time work, devoting his life to the mountains, mixing up margaritas and sending big alpine routes in areas like Patagonia, Pakistan and Alaska. Originating on the East Coast, now residing in Estes Park, CO, Kelly spends his days outdoors climbing rock, ice, and snow and being an editor/author. Cordes is the Author of “The Tower” A CHRONICLE OF CLIMBING AND CONTROVERSY ON CERRO TORRE.

Before Saturday’s slideshow, the Keene Valley Fire Department and the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery will be hosting an All-You-Can-Eat spaghetti dinner at the nearby fire hall starting at 5:00 p.m. Tickets for the spaghetti dinner are $15, with all proceeds benefiting the Keene Valley Fire Department. Get there early for this incredibly popular feast and join us after for Saturday night’s slideshow presentation!

On Sunday, Black Diamond sponsored climber, Kevin Mahoney will present his slide show on local first ascents from The Northeast to the greater ranges of Alaska and the Karakorum, the success and failures of what it takes to make it happen!

There will be instructional clinics on ice climbing, mountaineering, snowshoeing and avalanche awareness on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There are very limited openings available. More detailed registration information is available at www.mountaineer.com/mountainfest. On Saturday and Sunday, demo gear will be available for public testing at Adirondack Rock and River, located on Alstead Hill Road in Keene, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

All Mountainfest evening presentations are open to the public. We encourage all attendees to bring a non-perishable donation to the Keene Food Pantry to the weekend’s evening festivities. Mountainfest is a charity event that supports local and regional non-profits every year, and we thank you for helping us continue this tradition. Whether you come for the clinics or just climb on your own and check out the evening entertainment, Mountainfest is THE place to be this Martin Luther King weekend.
