38th Annual Northwood Invitational & Alumni Pond Hockey Tournament
For the past 37 years Lake Placid has been the setting for one of the finest prep-school hockey tournaments in the country, hosted by Northwood School. The Northwood School Invitational Hockey Tournament has included some of the best teams, players, and coaches in the history of the game. NHL players like Todd Marchant (Anaheim Ducks), Craig Conroy ’90 (Calgary Flames) and Bill Guerin (Pittsburgh Penguins), as well as standouts like Mike Richter ’85 (NY Rangers) and Tony Granato ’83 (San Jose Sharks), played in the tournament before they made it big. The addition of girls’ ice hockey to Northwood in 2000 bolstered the ranks of Olympians who have competed in the Northwood School Invitational Tournament. The 2010 U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey Team had seven tournament alumnae on the roster.
The tournament features three conferences: Boys’ Junior/Midget, Girls’, and Boys’ High School. The winner of the Boys’ Junior/Midget division takes home the Chris Ferrier ’00 Memorial Trophy, which honors alumnus Marine Sergeant Christopher Ferrier, who passed away tragically in 2007 in a traffic accident in his hometown of Huntington, N.Y.
On Saturday, January 14, the 10th Annual Alumni Pond Hockey Tournament will return to Mirror Lake in front of the Golden Arrow Hotel. Alumni and parent teams of six will take to the pond for this four-on-four event with no goalies and modified goals.
