Hiking trails in the Adirondacks

Home to the largest trail system in the nation, the Adirondacks offers some of the best hiking in the East with over 2,000 miles of marked hiking trails. Most notable among these are the region’s trails leading to the 46 High Peaks, most of which are over 4,000 feet. With so many mountains and trails to choose from, it's no surprise that hiking and climbing are favorites among Lake Placid’s outdoor activities.

The High Peaks are beautiful, which means they're also extremely popular. Consider getting away from the crowds by tackling some of these lesser visited mountains. The views are just as nice!

Adventurous Adirondack hikes

Looking for a challenge? Try Mount Marcy, the tallest mountain in New York State at 5,344 feet, or choose Mount Haystack for one of the most demanding hikes in the High Peaks Region. Tackle either of these and you’ll see, the summit views are worth the trek!

Favorite Lake Placid day hikes

Looking for a hike that doesn’t take the entire day? The Adirondack Park is home to a number of day hikes that will leave you time and energy to enjoy the rest of what the area has to offer while still offering stunning views! Cascade Mountain — a local favorite — is one of the easiest of the High Peaks to climb and is known for its spectacular panoramic vista. For some of the region’s shorter hikes try Owl’s Head, Cobble Hill or Balanced Rocks — all three are great family hikes or perfect for a quick jaunt with friends.

Backpack the Adirondacks

The Adirondack Park is a prime backpacking destination with over six-million-acres that offer a variety of backcountry camping and lean-to locations. After a few nights of sleeping under the stars, treat yourself to a hot shower and relaxing stay in one of Lake Placid’s many comfortable hotels.
