South Fork of the Boquet River

  • state Route 73, Keene Valley

Great fishing from shore is what you'll find here! And the brown trout are plentiful.

Getting there

From the intersection of state Route 73 and 86 in Lake Placid, follow Route 73 toward Keene. Continue through Keene, Keene Valley, and St. Huberts. Roughly 3.9 miles past Chapel Pond there is a small bridge over the river. Note that this is different than the larger steel bridge that crosses the North Fork.

Fishing

You can head up or downstream from the bridge with plenty of shore fishing to be had, and with ample room to do it comfortably. Fly fishing and wading is the best option, but floating a lure tends to work well too. If you head downstream, the North and South Forks converge into the main river. The water is a bit deeper and has a wider berth through here.

Boat access: None

Insider tips: The bigger fish are downstream from the bridge, but smaller trout can be caught upstream in the deeper pools.

Fish species: Brown trout, landlocked salmon

Special regulations: Always follow New York state fishing regulations and be sure to pick up a NYS Freshwater Fishing Guide at your local outfitters or regional NYSDEC office.
