From the parking area on Mirror Lake Drive, walk up Mount Whitney Road for about 30 feet to the trailhead on the right. About 0.25 mile in you will come to the split with the long and short trails. Left is the long trail which could be used as a loop, but gets much less winter use.
Following the short trail you will start a steep climb over rough footing to a bare rock slab, which is very steep. A round-about trail skirts the rocks to the right and is recommended in winter for a safer passage. Above the slab you will climb to a second major intersection where the long trail comes in. Head to the right to reach the summit in 100 yards or so.
Trailhead: From the intersection of Route 73 and Route 86 in Lake Placid, follow Route 86 toward the center of town. Take a right at the town hall onto Mirror Lake Drive. Continue through the 4-way stop and place Mirror Lake to your left. Follow Mirror Lake Drive for approximately 1.1 miles to Mount Whitney Road on the right. Parking is off Mirror Lake Drive, there is room enough for 6 or so cars.
