Big Slide is known for "the best summit view." Of course, that's subjective, but a great start for your High Peaks experience. Makes for a nice loop with smaller mountains & fresh scenery the whole way.
Big Slide Trailhead: North on Route 73, near the center of Keene Valley, there's a large DEC sign that reads "High Peaks Wilderness Area and Johns Brook" on the left side of the road, near the Ausable Inn. Follow DEC sign for the 1.5 miles (crossing Johns Brook) to The Garden trailhead. Parking fee. Detailed instructions at Garden Trailhead on the Keene/Keene Valley website.
