Barkeater Cliff

  • Route 73, Keene

This is a remote, though tame crag on the backside of Pitchoff Mountain. An abundance of great beginner and moderate routes in a beautiful setting off the beaten path, makes for a fantastic day.

How to get there

From Lake Placid: Head on Rt. 73 towards Keene. Just before town, take a sharp left onto Alstead Hill Rd. Continue all down Alstead Hill Rd. until you reach the parking lot for Rock and River Outfitters. Park there, then head down the Jackrabbit Trail until you see the cairn on the lefthand side, just past a large wooden bridge. Follow this herd path, baring right of the house side boulder, and uphill for around 15 minutes.

Rock climbing

With a wide variety of climbs in the 5.5 to 5.8 range, this clean face provides incredible views of the Sentinel Range. Most routes are short enough to only necessitate a single rope, and the gear placements are great for those looking to hone their skills on moderate climbs.

We recommend you pick up a copy of the Adirondack Rock guidebook for more specific area and route beta.
