There really is no easy answer to this question. I suppose the real question is... How much room do you have in your car? Or how many bikes do you realistically want to bring with you on your trip? Without any hint of exaggeration I can honestly say that Lake Placid and the surrounding area has just about every type of cycling opportunity you can think of. As I write this post, the first weekly time trial of the season held on River Rd. hosted by Placid Planet Bicycles has just taken place, road cyclists are beginning to appear along the sides of our roadways, and mountain bikers are... continue reading

Whale's Tail Ski Trail- Try to say that 3 times fast!WOW! The month of March has delivered us the best snow conditions of the season, and what better way to celebrate than go out and ski! This is absolutely my favorite time of year to be an Adirondack local. Thanks to daylight savings time the days are long, and consistent snow has left us with some really fantastic skiing conditions. The High Peaks Region is littered with trails suitable for skiing, and the current snow conditions are calling us to get out and enjoy it. One my favorite mid-winter excursions is the Whale's Tail Ski Trail. It... continue reading

Skiing the Porter Mountain Loops found at the Mount Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex is as good as cross-country skiing gets!! The challenging terrain once used for the cross-country ski events in the 1980 Winter Olympics combined with the top-notch grooming by the staff at Mt. Van Ho make for an optimal experience any day that mother nature has blessed with enough snow to slide on. Challenging TerrainThe terrain out on the "Porter Mountain Loops" is steep, I mean really steep. There are climbs out there that will leave you breathless, and descents like “Peggy’s Puddle” that will leave... continue reading

Now that the days are getting longer I find myself more willing to venture out after a day of skiing at Whiteface Mountain or some other activity typically pursued earlier in the day. Cross country skiing to Whiteface Landing is a great way to soak up the last bit of daylight on some very moderate terrain with a very straightforward out-and-back route.Getting thereThis 6 mile round trip route has a high point in the middle, which gives you the feeling of skiing both up and downhill in both directions. The grade is mostly moderate and skiers of all ability levels will have a great time. The... continue reading

One Of Cross Country's Finest Trails The “Avalanche Pass” trail ski simply should not be missed if the conditions are right during your visit to the Lake Placid Area. It is absolutely one of the finest ski experiences an intermediate level trail skier, or better can have in the High Peaks. I have called Lake Placid my home for over 10 years, and each year I make this trail ski several times. I especially enjoy it early in the spring right after daylight savings time adds an hour of daylight and the afternoon feels endless.  I burst out of the Lake Placid Elementary School doors (I'm a... continue reading

Skiing and Swimming are two things not typically heard together in the same sentence let alone at the same party.  For over two decades the Adirondack Ski Touring Council, which maintains the Jack Rabbit Ski Trail has been bringing these two opposite activities together in the same great event.  The Annual Ski and Swim Party is an important fundraiser for the organization and contributes to its sustainability every year.  This year's event will take place on Sunday, January 26th from 3-6 pm at the Crowne Plaza's pool facility.  Food and beverages will be provided by a long list of local... continue reading

3 Point to Point Ski Routes on the Jack Rabbit Trail Strapping on your skis in one town and striding to another is really why the Jackrabbit Trail was created.  Connecting communities by ski travel is a really a great thing, and it is celebrated with each point to point adventure that we do.  There are three classic cross country ski tours in the Lake Placid area that begin in one location and end in another that should absolutely not be missed.  Personally, I try to do them each, several times a winter.  They each offer a different level difficulty and contrasting terrain.  Check with local... continue reading

Dog Friendly Ski Trails in Lake Placid If your dog is anything like mine he gets almost as excited as I do when the snow begins to fall.  He knows exactly when we’re going skiing and begins his uncontrollable wiggle as soon as I pull my ski boots off the closet shelf.  There is something really special about skiing with our four legged friends and luckily Lake Placid has some really great places to do it.  Keep in mind that it is always best to keep a leash handy when skiing with your dog and please extend the courtesy of cleaning up after your pet to other trail users.  Surrounding Lake... continue reading
