I grew up loving the mall. I remember all of my shopping took place there, in the world of suburban chain stores. The food court and the big glitzy stores, indoors. I could spend an entire day at a mall. I moved to the Adirondacks in my twenties and I didn't know what I would do without the fancy shopping malls. I was a retail junkie, a commercial, cookie-cutter-shopper junkie. I have changed. I have now experienced quaint, privately owned shops. I have made an effort each year to do the majority of my holiday shopping on the streets of Lake Placid. The thoughtful gifts I can give each... continue reading

One of my favorite parts about traveling is finding the best restuarants in the destination. This can be a difficult task because, well, I don't know the area. I have found the best way to find out the real gems in a town is to ask the locals. You can ask any local from a bartender, to a clerk at the local bookstore where to dine, and hopefully they will steer you in the right direction, but how do you know if you have the same taste? How do you know they really know what they are talking about? Well, the only real way to know is to experience the places on your own. Lake Placid has so many... continue reading

No other town does Halloween quite like Lake Placid. There is something special about a mountain town with autumn colors as the backdrop, and kids dressed in their spooky costumes during the middle of a Wednesday afternoon. The entire community and travelers visiting from all over come out to celebrate. From the Main Street parade to the trick or treaters in the neighborhoods, this is an event filled day for all. There is so much going on in town for kids and adults.  Recently, Lake Placid was named "The Best Town For Halloween" by Leisure and Travel Magazine. Once you experience it for... continue reading

I have a lot of extreme friends. Ironman athletes, hikers, rock climbers, and extreme outdoorsy types. These are people that go on adventures for vacations. They enjoy jumping off of bridges, climbing the highest peaks, and running marathons on their days off. They think this is normal activity and that I need more adventure in my life. I am really quite content with my kind of vacation. I prefer beaches, pools, and lakes. I like to jump into the lake from a boat, or look at the mountains from an Adirondack chair. I do, however, love photographs with views and family drives through the... continue reading

When I was a kid all I wanted to do on vacation was swim. It didn't matter what the hotel was like, it mattered what the pool was like. The other stuff was just details that mattered to my parents, but not to my siblings and me. Vacation meant swimming. Swimming until our skin was wrinkly and we were so exhausted we would fall asleep wrapped up in a towel by the water. Whatever vacation means to your family, whether it's hiking, biking, shopping, or swimming, Lake Placid has what you are looking for — beautiful resorts to go along with gorgeous swimming spots. Dive right into summer in Lake... continue reading

When the Lake Placid Horse Show and the I Love New York Horse Show come to Lake Placid, I get so excited. My kids and I can spend an entire day at these events, and then go back day after day for more fun. These are two of the nation's most prestigious equine events, complete with world-class riders and their well-cared-for horses. In fact, the championship hunter and jumper competitors compete for more than $530,000 in prizes and awards. I am not qualified to tell you about judging these competitions, but I can tell you about the outside world of the horse shows. There is so much going on... continue reading

Downtown Lake Placid's backdrop is stunning, with mountain views set along the shores of Mirror Lake. People on kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards line up along the water's edge to hear the Songs on the Lake. This seven week music series brings so much to downtown Lake Placid in the summer months, and the very best part is that it's free. Travelers and locals bring blankets and lawn chairs to the grassy area known as Mid's Park. The natural setting is a perfect spot to sit and watch live acts of all kinds, from regional to national. Even famous acts like Rusted Root have played this series.... continue reading
