I have a lot of extreme friends. Ironman athletes, hikers, rock climbers, and extreme outdoorsy types. These are people that go on adventures for vacations. They enjoy jumping off of bridges, climbing the highest peaks, and running marathons on their days off. They think this is normal activity and that I need more adventure in my life. I am really quite content with my kind of vacation. I prefer beaches, pools, and lakes. I like to jump into the lake from a boat, or look at the mountains from an Adirondack chair. I do, however, love photographs with views and family drives through the... continue reading

When I was a kid all I wanted to do on vacation was swim. It didn't matter what the hotel was like, it mattered what the pool was like. The other stuff was just details that mattered to my parents, but not to my siblings and me. Vacation meant swimming. Swimming until our skin was wrinkly and we were so exhausted we would fall asleep wrapped up in a towel by the water. Whatever vacation means to your family, whether it's hiking, biking, shopping, or swimming, Lake Placid has what you are looking for — beautiful resorts to go along with gorgeous swimming spots. Dive right into summer in Lake... continue reading

When the Lake Placid Horse Show and the I Love New York Horse Show come to Lake Placid, I get so excited. My kids and I can spend an entire day at these events, and then go back day after day for more fun. These are two of the nation's most prestigious equine events, complete with world-class riders and their well-cared-for horses. In fact, the championship hunter and jumper competitors compete for more than $530,000 in prizes and awards. I am not qualified to tell you about judging these competitions, but I can tell you about the outside world of the horse shows. There is so much going on... continue reading

Winter in Lake Placid can seem to last forever. We enjoy the days on the mountain, skating on Mirror Lake, and cross-country skiing. The cold nights are perfect for snuggling in at your hotel by the fire, or sipping cocktails in the hotel bar. Lake Placid, A Perfect Summer Getaway The word vacation was invented in the Adirondacks, this came about as the wealthy of Boston and New York city vacated the city for the fresh mountain air of the Adirondacks. Once you visit you will understand why. Maybe it is the feeling you get as soon as you enter the park. The feeling of relaxation as the real world problems melt away. Breathing in the mountain air. Whatever it is that creates that feeling of peace, it is evident in the Adirondacks. Nestled in the mountains is the village of Lake Placid. Travelers have vacationed here for generations... continue reading

Over the years I've worked in many aspects of the service industry in Lake Placid - from front desks to restaurants, and I am constantly asked the same question: "What is the best way to see the town?" Well, in my opinion, there is only one best way, and that is to take a walk around the lake. Mirror Lake has a paved path that is a 2.7-mile loop. This walk is beautiful in any season. Really. Even in the rain this is a great walk. The problem, for me, is there are so many stops and shops and restaurants along the way. I love to window shop and I love to stop and take in the views. Sometimes... continue reading

These days, as we're getting closer to the Olympics, I can hardly watch a milk commercial without getting teary-eyed. You know the ones I mean? They feature letters from proud parents to the athletes about how they were "born" on skis, how they never gave up, how they endured endless nights at the rinks, and cold days at the mountain... Now, here they are — Olympic athletes. They have trained their whole lives for this. This moment in time, this event, this year. Now. People in cities, towns, and states all over the country will connect to these commercials. They speak of dreams coming... continue reading
