'Tis the season It’s been getting fairly cold lately, but that’s okay with me — because it’s a sign that the holidays are just around the corner. This will be my first holiday season spent in Lake Placid, filled with family, friends, and a bunch of holiday adventures. I’m really looking forward to it! I’ve been researching all the options of things to do — and there’s a lot to choose from. My out-of-town family members have already checked out the rental houses in town, and are planning to join me for a week of fun right at the beginning of December. So far my list of must-do activities... continue reading

Conquering the Firsts… It’s the first significant snow of the year, first weekend that Mt. Van Hoevenberg is open for the season, first time I have ever skied alone.  I woke up this morning to the magical text: 6" Sweet.  That simple text is what we've all been waiting for — it's the first significant snowfall of the year. We have permission to hit the slope/track/trail of choice for an hour or so prior to hitting the office. Our mission: check out the conditions, take pictures, report back. One of the advantages to working in a beautiful mountain town. Where to go?  I chose Mt. Van... continue reading

One of the best things about traveling in the Lake Placid Region is the accessibility to so many activities. We've narrowed down our favorite family-friendly short hikes — all are under 4 miles round-trip, and are located within a few minutes of downtown. They're long enough to wear out the little kids, and short enough to conquer between meals. Now it's time for you to decide which view you prefer!   Keep voting for your ADK favorites: Lake, pond, or river? Where will you reel in the big one? Favorite 6er? Which way up? Winter activities, anyone? Biking the Coast? What’s your next... continue reading

The Adirondacks are an outstanding ski destination with numerous downhill and Nordic centers to choose from, but for those who prefer skiing on trails, the region has a bunch of that as well. You can accelerate to ridiculous speeds on the biggest drop in the east at Whiteface Mountain or spend a day kicking and gliding on the trails at the Cascade Ski Center. With the creation and widening of the slides on the peaks, and the dozens of hidden glades, backcountry skiing is another story altogether. With more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails in the Adirondacks, opportunities for trail skiing... continue reading

Replacing My Old Skis After taking a spill earlier this ski season using skinny, in-track skis on soft trail snow, I decided I needed to upgrade my trail skis for something different. My old Karhus were woefully shot, which was why I was using the skinny skis in the first place. And so, a few weeks ago, I started looking around at area ski retailers and online to determine what I wanted to purchase. I already knew I liked the concept behind the design of the Fischer off-track series of skis, but I wanted to check out everything to help make a more informed choice. After a few phone calls... continue reading

We slip into our skates for the first time of the season at the outdoor rink best known as Lake Placid Olympic Oval. My blades are rusty and I thrust my foot down the throat of the boot, trying to make my it pair with the skate. Eyes are pulled out of one side and the laces are frayed. My foot is in a wrestling hold with the boot while the skates look like they lost a fight while in storage. I wonder if this is the year to invest in a new pair? My son and daughter leave me enthusiastically behind. The speed skaters have exited the ice and it is time for public skating. My children mimic the... continue reading

This year I'm planning a girls getaway ski trip to Lake Placid. Yes, I live here. So, why am I planning what will essentially turn into a staycation for me? It's because I think this is a destination that has a little something for all of my girlfriends to enjoy. And hey, it's the perfect excuse to indulge and show my friends why I love living here! Usually there is a bit of a give and take from the more serious skiers and riders to the more casual snow bunnies and beginners, leaving the group, well, separated. Together yet apart. This year I am suggesting Lake Placid for a number of reasons... continue reading

Lake Placid really is the perfect family-friendly getaway! As we head into the holidays, I can't help but be overwhelmed a bit with the idea of entertaining Oliver, my very active 6-year-old, for two-weeks of vacation. While I know there are many parents out there that have awesome plans of action, I am fairly new to this break in routine. So, I did some investigating, I talked to some friends, I looked back on some of my family blogs, and then I came to the realization that the problem is not going to be finding activities to keep him entertained, it's going to be narrowing down... continue reading

Memories Made at Whiteface and Lake Placid On my last vacation I was lucky enough to get the chance to go skiing with my friends at Whiteface. My friend’s family rented a cabin on the edge of Mirror Lake, which is where we stayed for the three days we were in Lake Placid. The three days spent in the High Peaks were some of the best I've had recently and I would highly recommend to anyone and everyone to Ski the Face.  Skiing Whiteface for the First Time Peter, Erin, and I arrived at the cabin just in time for dinner on Sunday night. We were greeted by a warm fire and delicious food.... continue reading
