Lake Placid Blog

There it was. An opening in my work schedule. The weather said snow for the two days prior. The kids are in school and my wife would be at work. That means it’s time to head to Whiteface! So the texts go out to the usual suspects, but when the replies come back it’s all: “Gotta work” and “Can’t make it.” I realize that something amazing is about to happen. A day at Whiteface all by myself. Now “all by myself” is a relative term because Whiteface is a popular ski destination with a wide range of people. So there are technically other people at the mountain. And while I generally like riding... continue reading

I bet you’ll agree with me that the Adirondacks are the perfect place to learn about climate change. After all, Lake Placid is America’s First Winter Resort, and is especially attuned to the challenges associated with fluctuating, unseasonable temperatures and the continuous threat of extreme weather events.   This winter, we have a unique opportunity to learn more about this scientific phenomenon and some things we can do to mitigate its impact, simply by taking in a town-wide art exhibit. Green Team The Adirondacks enjoy a very long history of environmental leadership and vision. Way... continue reading

Skating on a frozen Adirondack lake: A 2017 must-do activity! There's something about skating on a lake that is a bit magical. I have friends from the south that are terrified at the thought of standing on the ice in the middle of frozen body of water, but it's definitely an experience to put on your must-do list when visiting Lake Placid. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and bordered by an alpine village decorated for the holidays, Mirror Lake really is a picture perfect place to take that cherished selfie. If you've never been on a lake — or, like me, it's been many, many years — this is... continue reading

Cold facts - winter calories Calories! It's all about calories. As soon as cold weather sets in here in the mountains I begin craving all those things that are loaded with calories and sugar that just launch us into that calorie nirvana state. Due to the fact that cold weather always sets in around the time of the holidays, I still haven't figured out if it's the cold or the holidays that's my undoing every year. Nevertheless, the calorie intake skyrockets this time each year - after all you've got to have fuel to stay warm, correct? Lake Placid has no shortage when it comes to places where... continue reading

Everyone knows Lake Placid is a great place to do your holiday shopping, right? I recently learned there's more to put you in the holiday spirit than just the beautifully decorated stores and the twinkling lights that adorn Main Street. Our lodging properties go all out this time of year, and it's the perfect opportunity to visit them. I started my tour just north of the village, where Whiteface Mountain dominates the horizon, and worked my way into downtown lobby by lobby.  Lake Placid Lodge The most out-of-the-way locale on this list, Lake Placid Lodge is worth the... continue reading

Ever wonder what it takes each year to put on an event the size of the Lake Placid Holiday Village Stroll?  This year's event takes place from Friday, December 9th, through Sunday, December 11th. I’ll give you a little peak behind the scenes of this really fun event that has a gazillion moving parts (ok, maybe not that many, but a LOT).   No sooner is the event concluded for one year, then the committee is meeting to plan for the next year. The committee consists of a group of 20-some awesomely creative people, many of whom have worked on the event since the very first, many years ago. The... continue reading
