Lake Placid Blog

We slip into our skates for the first time of the season at the outdoor rink best known as Lake Placid Olympic Oval. My blades are rusty and I thrust my foot down the throat of the boot, trying to make my it pair with the skate. Eyes are pulled out of one side and the laces are frayed. My foot is in a wrestling hold with the boot while the skates look like they lost a fight while in storage. I wonder if this is the year to invest in a new pair? My son and daughter leave me enthusiastically behind. The speed skaters have exited the ice and it is time for public skating. My children mimic the... continue reading

This year I'm planning a girls getaway ski trip to Lake Placid. Yes, I live here. So, why am I planning what will essentially turn into a staycation for me? It's because I think this is a destination that has a little something for all of my girlfriends to enjoy. And hey, it's the perfect excuse to indulge and show my friends why I love living here! Usually there is a bit of a give and take from the more serious skiers and riders to the more casual snow bunnies and beginners, leaving the group, well, separated. Together yet apart. This year I am suggesting Lake Placid for a number of reasons... continue reading

Lake Placid really is the perfect family-friendly getaway! As we head into the holidays, I can't help but be overwhelmed a bit with the idea of entertaining Oliver, my very active 6-year-old, for two-weeks of vacation. While I know there are many parents out there that have awesome plans of action, I am fairly new to this break in routine. So, I did some investigating, I talked to some friends, I looked back on some of my family blogs, and then I came to the realization that the problem is not going to be finding activities to keep him entertained, it's going to be narrowing down... continue reading

Memories Made at Whiteface and Lake Placid On my last vacation I was lucky enough to get the chance to go skiing with my friends at Whiteface. My friend’s family rented a cabin on the edge of Mirror Lake, which is where we stayed for the three days we were in Lake Placid. The three days spent in the High Peaks were some of the best I've had recently and I would highly recommend to anyone and everyone to Ski the Face.  Skiing Whiteface for the First Time Peter, Erin, and I arrived at the cabin just in time for dinner on Sunday night. We were greeted by a warm fire and delicious food.... continue reading

When you think of Lake Placid, I’m sure many other words come to mind other than "Halloween." Olympics, hiking, destination vacation... sure, but Halloween? Well, after you finish reading this, it just might! After all, Lake Placid did receive the distinguished honor from Travel + Leisure in 2013 as one of the best towns in America to celebrate Halloween! Their reasons include the cutest Elementary School parade down Main Street, a rendition of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts and, to top it all off, a bar crawl with some pretty amazing prizes for Best... continue reading

Hi there! My name is Nibbler. I'm psyched because today, I get to invent my own purrrrrrfect day in Lake Placid, one of my favorite places on earth!  1. The lake  I'm starting my day with a morning paddle, and there's plenty of places to do it in and around Lake Placid! There's nothing like getting on the lake to forget your troubles and find your zen. And while I'm at it, I'm going to catch a fish or two to munch on. 2. MTB Next I'll head to the trails to shred some singletrack. I'm just going to take a little break under here while this dude catches some air.  3. Vino What a fun... continue reading

The best way to face your fears is to confront them, and that’s what my friend Jess did during our visit to Experience ADK Outdoors, a new zip line course at Cascade Ski Center. The ropes Bill “Big Wheels” Walton and Emory “Swamp Donkey” Clark, were our guides during the adventure. Before heading into the treetops, they helped us get our harnesses on and explained the braking system to us. It’s basically just a pair of work gloves, one of which fits into a leather sleeve to serve as your brake hand. To control your speed, simply press the palm of your brake hand down onto the line and you’... continue reading

Fall is a wonderful time to go out exploring and see some amazing scenery. You wander around outside and enjoy the chill in the air. And the best part about getting a little chilly is that you have to warm up afterward.  My favorite way to warm up is to get a little taste of the season. Many of the local restaurants have scrumptious cocktails that scream fall with hot mixers and spicy goodness, and they're sure to make you feel all toasty warm before you know it. Hot. Buttered. Rum.  So, hot buttered rum is one of those things that I've heard of plenty of times, but never actually tried.... continue reading

Top 5 ways to travel to Lake Placid  So you want to go to Lake Placid, eh? Of course you do! Everyone does, because it's an amazing place to visit any time of the year. But what's that you say? It's too hard to get here? FALSE! It's not hard to get here at all. In fact, the journey here is all part of the fun. (Life advice as well as travel advice, my friend. I'm like a wise old lady, except I'm super young and not old at all. Ok, whatever, I'm in my 30s.)   1. Automobile If you have a car, driving is a snap. Those coming from the New... continue reading
