Nobody has ever accused me of being patient. Despite residing in the restorative, protected wilderness landscape of the Adirondacks, I’ve adapted easily to the fast-paced, social media-infused, 24/7 news cycle world in which we all live. Given that default, anyone who can successfully coerce me into adopting a mode of quiet contemplation for more than two hours must really know what they're doing. At least one such individual exists in the Adirondacks. I met Helene Gibbens in late summer of 2016 when she first launched her new business, Adirondack Riverwalking. I have now participated in... continue reading

Guest blogger: Ryan Damp Whether you live in Lake Placid year-round or are here for a brief vacation, this alpine village has a seemingly endless assortment of activities to offer. Amid all the noise and excitement surrounding activities such as bobsledding, scenic plane rides, mountain biking, rock climbing, and extreme summer tubing (just to name a few), there is one activity that is often overlooked: walking. While it may not provide the same adrenaline rush as many of the other activities in the area, taking a walk around the village is an unmatched way to experience the beauty of Lake... continue reading

All I had to do was lie face down, clear my head, and let myself sink into the massage table. What followed was 50 minutes of bliss. I’ve never had a professional massage before, so I was intrigued by the offer to spend an afternoon at the Mirror Lake Inn Spa. It couldn’t have come at a better time — I had just returned from a neck-cramping, overnight flight from Phoenix, so despite the dozens of miles of desert hiking my wife and I logged, my body was feeling stiff and reluctant to move. I told my masseuse, Sandy, about this and she made things right, but as they say in the desert, let's... continue reading

Frequently when I eat lunch at The Good Bite Kitchen, someone comes in, takes a look at the menu, realizes it's all vegetarian, and then leaves. Some people who do so are apologetic and some are embarrassed, but restaurant owner Kayte Billerman says she's OK with people leaving if they're not interested in her food. She's not trying to force anyone to eat anything they don't like!  But those who stop in and give it a try might just be surprised with how satisfied they are with their sans-meat meal. Kayte pays a lot of attention to making sure each dish is balanced with... continue reading

Leap year is one of those occasions that largely goes unnoticed until it's suddenly the 29th of February and you realize you have that extra day! In the interest of utilizing that extra whole day in 2016 I decided to invent my own perfect leap day in Lake Placid and focus on just ME.  After careful consideration about what I wanted to do, I decided on a little bit of pampering, some coffee and awesome pastry (no, calories don't count on leap day), and then I'd play it by ear.  I slept late (something I almost never do), and started my day out by heading to Starbucks for a splurge of coffee... continue reading

Underrated Activities When we think of the Adirondacks we often think of all the awesome outdoor activities. So, this week, we decided to focus on the more lesser-known or underrated activities that are available.  Living in the Lake Placid Region I feel like I'm pretty well-rounded: I make my way outside to enjoy nature at minimum a few days a week; I can shop on Main Street or grab dinner at one of our many restaurants whenever the mood strikes; I take in as many of the free music and cultural events as my schedule allows. I am always on the go.  And that, my friends, is exactly what... continue reading

On Pins & Needles My mind is somewhat blown. I mean, you know how it is, right? You have a preconceived notion about something (in this particular case, Acupuncture), and then you find out you are pretty close to being totally wrong. Like if there were 10 parts to a puzzle, you could maybe place one; you can't even find all four corners.  Luckily, I try to remain very open-minded to new experiences. Especially ones where I think I know what I am getting into, even when that knowledge involves little needles being inserted into my very anemic skin. So, of... continue reading

From Our View Point I have noticed something very interesting about attendees who come to Lake Placid for their conference: they are different when they leave! As a matter of practice, the CVB sales staff stands in the foyer of the Conference Center during registration to welcome conference staff, attendees, and exhibitors to Lake Placid. Upon arrival, there are signs, on those entering, of the stress they’ve endured while wrapping things up before leaving work for a couple of days, traveling to the destination, and the general uneasiness associated with a new place. By the end of the... continue reading
