Adirondack History: Summer Skating

"ICE SKATING (ON REAL ICE) TO BE LAKE PLACID SUMMER FEATURE"April, 1946-Ice skating on real ice will be one of the features of the Lake Placid summer recreation and sports program. Ice skating in the summer was born in the world famous Olympic Arena at Lake Placid in the summer of 1932, when for the first time on the North American continent an indoor arena attempted the unheard of feat of scheduling ice skating during the hot months of July and August.

Family Fun: A Spring Paddle on the Saranac River

There is really nothing like a canoe trip to really bring out the strengths and weaknesses in a family. It requires balance; strength and teamwork. We find we are in short supply of a little bit of each.

Warning: Festivals and events ahead!

As we head into 'the season', the list of spring, summer and fall events is growing by the minute. From sports to arts to festivals and more, there will be a plethora of events both big and small to fill your schedule as full as you wish from now until the snow flies again next fall. I wasn't going to add that line "again next fall", but since it's snowing right now, well, you see the problem with that sentence.

An Early Spring Paddle on Lake Colby

As the fast-warming spring cleared Adirondack lakes of ice, it became time to dig out the canoe and paddling gear from their winter hibernation and check out a local lake with my dog Wren. At the end of last summer I began to train Wren in a canoe, and she has done well. That is to say, she hasn't flipped us yet.

Family Fun: Ski the Bloomingdale Bog Trail

Cross-country skiing a portion of the Bloomingdale Bog trail is all I've ever managed to do. To do the whole 20 miles from end to end takes a bit more planning than what we want.
