The huge, multi-sport event runs from February 1-4 and it’s coming out of the gate bigger and better than ever. There it was. An opening in my work schedule. The weather said snow for the two days prior. The kids are in school and my wife would be at work. That means it’s time to head to Whiteface! So the texts go out to the usual suspects, but when the replies come back it’s all: “Gotta work” and “Can’t make it.” I realize that something amazing is about to happen. A day at Whiteface all by myself. Now, “all by myself” is a relative term because Whiteface is a popular ski destination with a wide range of people. So there are technically other people at the mountain. And while I generally like... continue reading

What happens in Placid when the temps start to rise? Spring skiing, of course! Submitted by Guest Blogger: Ryan Damp  February 14, 2017 – Spring (!?) preview Love was in the air this past Valentine’s Day thanks to heavy snowfall! We saw well over a foot dumped across Whiteface Mountain over a 48-hour period, adding onto the nearly 200 inches of snowfall that had already dropped this season. Conditions were immaculate and skiers of all ages and skill levels were able to enjoy their Valentine’s Day on the slopes of Whiteface. Guest blogger, Amy Cheney-Seymour, explains how she came to be registered for the upcoming Lake Placid Loppet. (The Lake Placid Loppet is a family-friendly Nordic ski race held during an annual Festival at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.) ** 2/22/17 Editor's note: Due to the expected inclement weather, the Loppet originally scheduled for Saturday, February 25 has been postponed until March 18, 2017.** The Lake Placid Loppet It was a promise. A pact. A bet, really, between me and a slippery little carp — or so I thought... On a stunning August morning, early rays skimming hues of orange on the water... continue reading

Replacing My Old Skis After taking a spill earlier this ski season using skinny, in-track skis on soft trail snow, I decided I needed to upgrade my trail skis for something different. My old Karhus were woefully shot, which was why I was using the skinny skis in the first place. And so, a few weeks ago, I started looking around at area ski retailers and online to determine what I wanted to purchase. I already knew I liked the concept behind the design of the Fischer off-track series of skis, but I wanted to check out everything to help make a more informed choice. After a few phone calls... continue reading

This year I'm planning a girls getaway ski trip to Lake Placid. Yes, I live here. So, why am I planning what will essentially turn into a staycation for me? It's because I think this is a destination that has a little something for all of my girlfriends to enjoy. And hey, it's the perfect excuse to indulge and show my friends why I love living here! Usually there is a bit of a give and take from the more serious skiers and riders to the more casual snow bunnies and beginners, leaving the group, well, separated. Together yet apart. This year I am suggesting Lake Placid for a number of reasons... continue reading
