This year I'm planning a girls getaway ski trip to Lake Placid. Yes, I live here. So, why am I planning what will essentially turn into a staycation for me? It's because I think this is a destination that has a little something for all of my girlfriends to enjoy. And hey, it's the perfect excuse to indulge and show my friends why I love living here! Usually there is a bit of a give and take from the more serious skiers and riders to the more casual snow bunnies and beginners, leaving the group, well, separated. Together yet apart. This year I am suggesting Lake Placid for a number of reasons... continue reading

It’s the highest vertical drop in the east, and here I am, strapped to a board about to descend this mighty mountain. Okay — so I didn’t quite get that far up the mountain, but I can certainly say I’ve gone snowboarding at Whiteface.  Snow Boarding 101  1) Take pride in acting and looking like a Jerry. 2) Don’t think about what anyone else thinks of you because you’re there to have fun. 3) Try something new. If you’re like me, I definitely don’t have any of the top-of-the-line ski gear, you just have to rock what you have. Live and learn Be aware of the gaper gap! This is the gap... continue reading

If you like winter sports action, good local food, and zip lines, then you need to check out the 38th annual Empire State Winter Games. There it was. An opening in my work schedule. The weather said snow for the two days prior. The kids are in school and my wife would be at work. That means it’s time to head to Whiteface! So the texts go out to the usual suspects, but when the replies come back it’s all: “Gotta work” and “Can’t make it.” I realize that something amazing is about to happen. A day at Whiteface all by myself. Now, “all by myself” is a relative term because Whiteface is a popular ski destination with a wide range of people.
