Replacing My Old Skis After taking a spill earlier this ski season using skinny, in-track skis on soft trail snow, I decided I needed to upgrade my trail skis for something different. My old Karhus were woefully shot, which was why I was using the skinny skis in the first place. And so, a few weeks ago, I started looking around at area ski retailers and online to determine what I wanted to purchase. I already knew I liked the concept behind the design of the Fischer off-track series of skis, but I wanted to check out everything to help make a more informed choice. After a few phone calls... continue reading

We slip into our skates for the first time of the season at the outdoor rink best known as Lake Placid Olympic Oval. My blades are rusty and I thrust my foot down the throat of the boot, trying to make my it pair with the skate. Eyes are pulled out of one side and the laces are frayed. My foot is in a wrestling hold with the boot while the skates look like they lost a fight while in storage. I wonder if this is the year to invest in a new pair? My son and daughter leave me enthusiastically behind. The speed skaters have exited the ice and it is time for public skating. My children... continue reading

Lake Placid really is the perfect family-friendly getaway! As we head into the holidays, I can't help but be overwhelmed a bit with the idea of entertaining Oliver, my very active 6-year-old, for two-weeks of vacation. While I know there are many parents out there that have awesome plans of action, I am fairly new to this break in routine. So, I did some investigating, I talked to some friends, I looked back on some of my family blogs, and then I came to the realization that the problem is not going to be finding activities to keep him entertained, it's going to be narrowing down what we do... continue reading

Memories Made at Whiteface and Lake Placid On my last vacation I was lucky enough to get the chance to go skiing with my friends at Whiteface. My friend’s family rented a cabin on the edge of Mirror Lake, which is where we stayed for the three days we were in Lake Placid. The three days spent in the High Peaks were some of the best I've had recently and I would highly recommend to anyone and everyone to Ski the Face.  Skiing Whiteface for the First Time Peter, Erin, and I arrived at the cabin just in time for dinner on Sunday night. We were greeted by a warm fire and delicious food.... continue reading

When you think of Lake Placid, I’m sure many other words come to mind other than "Halloween." Olympics, hiking, destination vacation... sure, but Halloween? Well, after you finish reading this, it just might! After all, Lake Placid did receive the distinguished honor from Travel + Leisure in 2013 as one of the best towns in America to celebrate Halloween! Their reasons include the cutest Elementary School parade down Main Street, a rendition of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts and, to top it all off, a bar crawl with some pretty amazing prizes for Best... continue reading

Hi there! My name is Nibbler. I'm psyched because today, I get to invent my own purrrrrrfect day in Lake Placid, one of my favorite places on earth!  1. The lake  I'm starting my day with a morning paddle, and there's plenty of places to do it in and around Lake Placid! There's nothing like getting on the lake to forget your troubles and find your zen. And while I'm at it, I'm going to catch a fish or two to munch on. 2. MTB Next I'll head to the trails to shred some singletrack. I'm just going to take a little break under here while this dude catches some air.  3. Vino What a fun... continue reading

The best way to face your fears is to confront them, and that’s what my friend Jess did during our visit to Experience ADK Outdoors, a new zip line course at Cascade Ski Center. The ropes Bill “Big Wheels” Walton and Emory “Swamp Donkey” Clark, were our guides during the adventure. Before heading into the treetops, they helped us get our harnesses on and explained the braking system to us. It’s basically just a pair of work gloves, one of which fits into a leather sleeve to serve as your brake hand. To control your speed, simply press the palm of your brake hand down onto the line and you’... continue reading

Summers in Lake Placid certainly make it a challenge to stay inside; rarely will you find me parked in front of the TV when there's so much to do - paddling, mountain biking, hiking, you name it! I'm a huge fan of sports, and during the hot weather I’m usually out participating in them instead of watching them. But, as the Adirondack air gets a little crisper and fall begins to creep into the region, the itch to watch my favorite team get the W starts to take over. It is, after all, football season! I find it difficult to sit and watch TV at home when there's so much more I want to be... continue reading

In addition to our Lake Placid events, one of the most popular fall events takes place at our very close neighbor, The Whiteface Region. Falling in early-October, Whiteface Mountain holds a two-day Oktoberfest event celebrating all the traditions of Bavaria, right in our back yard. Don't miss this fun event filled with live music, great food, and family-fun! Fall in the Adirondacks is filled with events celebrating the season of flaming leaves and the fall harvest season  Lake Placid plays host to many of these Adirondack events. Plan ahead with lodging reservations for any of your... continue reading

As a self-proclaimed avid hiker, sometimes I don’t always have time for a four-to-five hour hike, or even a one-to-two hour hike for that matter. Luckily, we have many quick hikes that still offer excellent views! I have chosen my three favorite short hikes to share.  First Up: Owls Head in Keene Please note: The Owls Head trail in Keene closed in 2017 and will remain so until further notice. Please respect the landowners' rights and avoid using it. Let’s clarify which “Owls Head” this actually is. So, there are three hikes in the Adirondacks with a similar name: “Owl Head Lookout” in... continue reading
