When you first look at the Mountain Bike Maps published by the volunteers at the Barkeater Trails Alliance and available at Placid Planet as well as High Peaks Cyclery, it's hard to know which trails are good to ride.  One trail that seems to make everyone happy is known as "Twisted Sister."  This trail was one of the first built on the Lake Placid Club and Resort property by Peter Fish in aniticipation of an Exterra off-road triathlon that was held in Lake Placid for a couple of years.  The initial generosity of the Lussi family to allow mountain bike trails on their property was an important catalyst to the further development of off-road cycling opportunities in the area.

The best place to park a car to ride "Twisted Sister" would be either in the meetered lot next to the Olympic Center or at the Lake Placid Club and Resort's  Driving Range Parking Lot.  Either way, you'll want to locate the section of the Jackrabbit Trail that is accessed across Rt. 86 from the Intersection with Northwood Road.  Riders will stay on the double track Jackrabbit Trail ntil the first major intersection where you'll make a left onto another double track and right onto a trail named "Bushwood."  Down the Bushwood Trail riders will see the entrance to "Twisted Sister" about a quarter of a mile down on the left side.  Off of Bushwood there aother great trails like Ty's Ties, Lacy Underalls, and "Varmint Cong."

Once on Twisted Sister, riders will immediately understand how it got it's name.  The trail's twists and turns will keep the attention of the most seasoned riders while the smooth surface makes this route a good option for less agressive riders as well.  The in the hardwood forest that "Twisted Sister" was constructed in seems to dry quickly.  On a normal year there is little mud, and "Twisted Sister" can be a good choice when other trails are too wet to ride.  The trail undulates up and down over varied terrain as it nears the end, and riders can either continue on to Varmint Cong, which leads to Judge Schmales or Lumber Yard (currently a swamp: not Reccomended) or Return to Bushwood.

Without a map it can be tricky to find your way around out there.  Please be sure to stop into Placid Planet Bicycles or High Peaks Cyclery to pick one up, and support the Barkeater Trails Alliance in the process.
