Cobble Hill, nestled in the backdrop of Mirror Lake often catches the eye of visitors, when they aren't looking over at the High Peaks that is. But what many don't realize is that there is a very attractive trail system on this mountain that opens up an excellent hiking opportunity to the entire family. Located right off Mirror Lake Drive and Mount Whitney Road the summit sits so close to the village it almost screams, "Climb Me." With easy to moderate hiking conditions who could say no? Cobble Hill can also make for a good wildflower destination as well.

My recommendation is to start you walk from the main street area and hike the first portion of the Mirror Lake Loop and when you get to the northeast corner of mirror lake start looking for Mount Whitney Road. The trail is about 50 feet up Mount Whitney Road on the right. Cross the bridge over the stream, the bridge at this point has been nearly destroyed from rushing water, but still passable. The first portion can be a bit confusing with several intersections to private land, just follow the signs to Cobble Hill. Once you make way through this portion, the trail splits, left for the long route or straight for the short route to the summit will be in front of you; this makes for a great loop option. I recommend doing the short trail first due to steep terrain. There is a slab rock section, which is the one that can be seen from town. This can either be climbed head-on or you can push the easy button and skirt it to the right - you choose your adventure here. Not far above the rock will be your summit with amazing views out over the Village of Lake Placid and toward the High Peaks Region.

Just below the summit you passed an intersection, when you return to this spot you can make a right and head down the long trail to Echo Lake. This trail is much easier and you will have the chance to look out over Echo Lake. The trail along the lake is very wet, so expect to see much water. Just follow the trail back to Mount Whitney Road and Mirror Lake Drive; now if you have it left in you, continue your loop around Mirror Lake and see Lake Placid from other angles. Don't feel like walking around the lake as well? There is parking along Mirror Lake Drive near the trailhead for 6-8 cars.

There you have it; a family outing at less than 2.5 miles in total that most anyone can handle. Just arrive into town but can't wait to hit the trails, this is perfect. Now you are close to town, close to lodging and some outstanding places to eat and have a cocktail. Want more information on outstanding family events and fun or maybe some more serious hikes, pick up a guidebook at a local gear shop or hire a professional mountain guides to take you. The map below is just for basic reference and should not be used a way finder. Some of the roads on the map no longer exist as roads but abandoned ones and some were converted into current foot trails.
