March is upon us and with it come some of the most fun events of the winter season. The air is warmer, the snow softer and being outdoors is a lot more fun with less required layers of clothing!

Backcountry skiing
Skiing the Angel Slide in the High Peaks Backcountry

An exciting and relatively new event in Keene Valley this weekend (March 2 and 3) is the Adirondack Backcounry Ski Fest. This year's festival celebrates nearly four decades of backcountry skiing in the Adirondacks and the greater ranges of the Northeast, and will showcase local legends Dave Hough, Ron Konowitz (aka "Ron Kon"), Chuck Boyd and Drew Haas as they share their unique skiing experiences over the years. You can participate by joining in demos, clinics and even several backcountry expedition trips into the High Peaks as well as evening presentations and a dinner. This event raises funds for the NYS Ski Education Foundations's Nordic racing programs and Adirondack Ski Touring Council, stewards of the backcountry ski trail system, including the famous Jackrabbit Trail.

Whiteface Region will play host to the USASA Ski/Snowboard Cross at Whiteface Mountain on Sunday, March 3. It's a wild and exciting event to watch as four racers battle it out to be the first to the finish line on a downhill course with bumps and banked turns. You won't fully understand the excitement of this race until you've seen it for the first time.

In Schroon Lake, the local Fish and Game club will play host to the Annual Ice Fishing Derby on March 2 and 3. Enjoy two days of ice fishing and compete for prizes during this annual Schroon Lake event. Also in Schroon Lake, fun reigns supreme at the Annual Cardboard Box Derby on the Schroon Lake Ski Hill. Build your own "vehicle" from cardboard box(es) to slide down the hill in a riotous competition of spills and thrills. And the best part - it's FREE!

Stand by for more details on this event during a greatly anticipated time of year - maple sugaring season!

There are also a multitude of cultural events around the four regions, too numerous to list. You can find more by searching the region's individual events calendars.

Have fun. Get out. Get busy enjoying all we have to offer here in Lake Placid and the Adirondacks.
