The best way to face your fears is to confront them, and that’s what my friend Jess did during our visit to Experience ADK Outdoors, a new zip line course at Cascade Ski Center. The ropes Bill “Big Wheels” Walton and Emory “Swamp Donkey” Clark, were our guides during the adventure. Before heading into the treetops, they helped us get our harnesses on and explained the braking system to us. It’s basically just a pair of work gloves, one of which fits into a leather sleeve to serve as your brake hand. To control your speed, simply press the palm of your brake hand down onto the line and you’... continue reading

Fall is a wonderful time to go out exploring and see some amazing scenery. You wander around outside and enjoy the chill in the air. And the best part about getting a little chilly is that you have to warm up afterward.  My favorite way to warm up is to get a little taste of the season. Many of the local restaurants have scrumptious cocktails that scream fall with hot mixers and spicy goodness, and they're sure to make you feel all toasty warm before you know it. Hot. Buttered. Rum.  So, hot buttered rum is one of those things that I've heard of plenty of times, but never actually tried.... continue reading
Top 5 ways to travel to Lake Placid  So you want to go to Lake Placid, eh? Of course you do! Everyone does, because it's an amazing place to visit any time of the year. But what's that you say? It's too hard to get here? FALSE! It's not hard to get here at all. In fact, the journey here is all part of the fun. (Life advice as well as travel advice, my friend. I'm like a wise old lady, except I'm super young and not old at all. Ok, whatever, I'm in my 30s.)   1. Automobile If you have a car, driving is a snap. Those coming from the New... continue reading
To many, fall means football season, pumpkin spice season, back to school season, scarf and sweater season, a new season of your favorite sitcom, or some years, crazy political pundit sparring season.  Those things are all fine (except the pumpkin spice - I’m completely over that). But to me, the arrival of fall also means it’s time for golf in Lake Placid. If you’ve played golf in Lake Placid at any time of year, you’re already hooked and probably don’t need to hear any more from me on the subject. However, for those that need more intel, I’ve drafted the...  Top 5 reasons to PUTT Lake... continue reading
AUTHOR'S NOTE 9/21/16: On my daily commute to Lake Placid, I often spy rock climbers on some of the popular roadside crags along the route. During a recent drive on Route 73 to Keene Valley, I saw some folks on the Spider’s Web, and it reminded me of this blog I wrote a few years ago about climbing on that very cliff.  The rock climbing memory cited in this blog is cemented in my brain, and so is the fact that it was rock climbing that cemented our decision to live in the Adirondacks forever. Guess you’ll have to read it to find out why!  (The following blog was originally published 6/6/12... continue reading
Summers in Lake Placid certainly make it a challenge to stay inside; rarely will you find me parked in front of the TV when there's so much to do - paddling, mountain biking, hiking, you name it! I'm a huge fan of sports, and during the hot weather I’m usually out participating in them instead of watching them. But, as the Adirondack air gets a little crisper and fall begins to creep into the region, the itch to watch my favorite team get the W starts to take over. It is, after all, football season! I find it difficult to sit and watch TV at home when there's so much more I want to be... continue reading
In addition to our Lake Placid events, one of the most popular fall events takes place at our very close neighbor, The Whiteface Region. Falling this year on October 1 and 2, Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain is a two-day event celebrating all the traditions of Bavaria, right in our back yard. Don't miss this fun event filled with live music, great food, and family-fun! Fall in the Adirondacks is filled with events celebrating the season of flaming leaves and the fall harvest season  Lake Placid plays host to many of these Adirondack events. Plan ahead with lodging reservations for any of... continue reading
